Today in Music History:
In 1990, Milli Vanilli producer Frank Farian held a press conference to confirm the rumours that the two members of the group Rob and Fab had not sung on any of their hit records.I know it's only November yet I'm ready to announce my pick for the best album of 2007. I'm 100 percent certain that in the few remaining weekks of 2007 there will nothing released that is as good as Doc Neeson's new album Acoustic Sessions. For those that don't know, Irish Born Doc Neeson fronted one of my favorite bands for almost 25 years. That band being the Australian hard rocking, pub rockers The Angels.
Doc is an Australian rock legend and in 1999 he suffered a debilitating spinal injury in a car accident on a Sydney motorway in 1999. Neeson's back specialist, an Angel's fan, delivered the bad news to the performer who is known for his very physical live performances.
The doctor told him 'I know how you perform, and I'm sorry to break the news to you Doc, but if you don't stop you're going to be in a wheelchair for the rest of your life, so consider yourself retired,' Since then members of The Angels have split into two camps, and have fought legal battles over the right to tour as The Angels. At this point, there is the Original Angels band, minus Doc Neeson, and Doc Neeson's Angels, with whom Doc Neeson is touring and has just finished an album in September called Acoustic Sessions. While Neeson's on-stage grimace in the past could be seen for dramatic effect, the facial expressions will likely now be due to real agony as he is in constant pain.
Many music fans firmly believe that Australian rock has never exceeded the heights of the "pub rock" scene in the 70s and early 80s. Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Mental as Anything, INXS and many others wore a path up and down the east coast as they toured relentlessly. But no one rocked harder than the Angels.
It is great that Doc has bounced back and has put out such a fine album. Hard rocking pub anthems such as Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, No Secrets, and Marseilles translate very well and sound like brand new songs. I'm very impressed with this album and like I said, it is the best album of 2007. Here's a couple samples. Listen then buy it.
