They Only Come Out at Night

They Only Come Out at Night is the fourth studio album by the Edgar Winter Group. It went to No. 3 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart, eventually sold two million copies, and features two of the band's biggest hits, "Frankenstein" (#1 Pop Singles) and "Free Ride" (#14 Pop Singles). The album was released in November of 72, but it wasn't until the next year that either song became big. I remember hearing those two songs on the radio all that summer and  going to the record store and buying Frankenstein on 45. It wasn't until the early 80's when I finally bought a copy of the album only to find that there were 8 more great cuts on the album. Speaking of monsters, just look at the lineup on this album. Rick Derringer produced and played many of the instruments, Ronnie Montrose lead guitar, Dan Hartman vocals and of course the albinoed one himself. In live performances of the song, Edgar Winter further pioneered the advancement of the synthesizer as a lead instrument by becoming the first person ever to strap a keyboard instrument around his neck, giving him the on-stage mobility and audience interaction of guitar players. Talk about a supergroup.
